WEEKNIGHTS
LETTERPRESS I
Participants will investigate the fundamentals of typesetting
and
presswork in this course designed for those without prior
printing experience. Students will explore the California job
case, composition, lock-up, inking, and maintenance, as well as
learn to print from photo-engravings, wood and linoleum
blocks. Each student will work on a project with the
instructor's guidance.

NEW! THE PRIVATE PRESS: ADVENTURES IN PUBLISHING The class
will collectively design, typeset, bind and market a limited
edition book. All facets of publishing will be discussed,
including author contracts, copyright law, aspects of design
and
materials, as well as advertising methods, projecting
production
expenses and budgets. This is a very hands-on production class.
Printing and binding experience is helpful but not necessary.

IMAGE PRINTING ON THE VANDERCOOK
Using photo-engraved, half-tone, and line plates, as well as
the
newly available plastic polymer plates, artists will learn how
to
layer and collage images and type to create a variety of
effects
using the same press. This class will emphasize techniques for
creating editions. Participants will create a collaborative
portfolio.

to learn more about the type in that case and the inner
workings of that press! Delve into hands-on typographic
history.
Develop your own technique and aesthetic. Explore refined
typesetting and letter spacing, typoglyphs, relief collagraphs,
and make-ready prints in individual and group projects.
Beginning
letterpress experience is a prerequisite. The first class will
be

ART OF THE BOOK: FROM START TO FINISH
This course will explore each important stage of the bookmaking
process in depth: conceptualization, planning, design,
printing,
illustration, and binding. Students will be encouraged to
follow
their own creative direction, but will be given the technical
skills and experience necessary to make a book according to
their
vision. Lively discussion, constructive critiques, group
problem
solving, and intense work sessions will ensure that each
student
leaves with a rich understanding of bookmaking. Previous
experience in printing and binding is suggested, but not
required. Students should come to the first session with ideas
for book projects in mind.

THE THRILL OF THE CHASE: INTRODUCTION TO PLATEN PRESS PRINTING
By producing a limited edition, each student will learn the
entire platen press printing process from design and
typesetting
to locking up the chase and making ready for plates and type.
Die-cutting, scoring and the general mechanics of this
remarkable
press will be investigated. Previous letterpress experience
helpful, but not required.
