As a newcomer to this list I'm trying to catch up on the
past few months (things happen very quickly here!), and have
been browsing search patterns thru palimpsest. There was some
discussion in July about storing and exibiting artists' books,
and yesterday Rebecca Stone had some hand-ling q's (I often use
latex gloves inside cloth ones).
It made me think of Mindell Dubansky, Preservation Librarian
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mindy gave a talk on
preserving and exhibiting artists' books at the Center for Book
Arts' 1990 conference (the proceedings are available from the
Center). She gives workshops on this subject all over the
country, at symposia and as part of university curricula. I
just called her and gave her this list address. I think anybody
who runs a program in this area might want to talk to her about
doing a workshop for them. She's got a wealth of information,
and has handled and catalogued books and book objects of every
period (she's gone through all the collections at the Met and
catalogued the books there for her archive, with information
about their bindings, which had never been done). She's at the
museum (212 879-5500, x-3220).
