Your query was passed on to the book arts list, and in the event no one has
responded yet, here's my 2 cents worth.
If your current volumes have some associational value, especially if they
came from the library of one of the donors whose portraits you mention,
then you should probably get them repaired or rebound.
If, on the other hand, they are only important to you because of the
portraits they contain, then I would try to obtain better copies to replace
the damaged ones, and use the money saved to repair something else.
