Conservation Technician (temporary, part-time)

The Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia seeks to hire a
conservation technician to assist with the rehousing of materials in our
Beatrix Potter, Kate Greenaway, and Arthur Rackham collections. This is an
NEH-funded project.

Qualifications: Training and experience in the conservation of paper-based
materials; knowledge of archival storage techniques and materials; experience
in constructing protective enclosures for rare books; excellent fine-motor
skills and capacity for attention to detail; ability to work with minimal
supervision.

Duties: Under the direction of the department head and in cooperation with the
librarian responsible for preservation activities: measures for and/or
constructs phase boxes; removes and/or replaces acidic interleaving tissue in
books; encapsulates manuscript materials; creates archival folders for
manuscript materials and places materials in the folders; maintains cleanliness
of work area; performs other related duties as required.

Hours: 10 hours per week for 36 weeks. Hours will be worked between 9 am and
4:45 pm, Monday to Friday, preferably on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and scheduled
with the approval of the Librarian II and/or the department head.

Rate of pay: $10.00 per week for 36 weeks. This is not a civil service position
with the City of Philadelphia, but a position with The Free Library Foundation.
There are no health or other benefits available with this position.
