VARDIS FISHER WORKS TO "LIVE" AT IDAHO CENTER FOR THE BOOK
The Idaho Center for the Book at Boise State University has been chosen as
the sole source of all works by writer Vardis Fisher following a
bequest by the estates of Vardis and Opal Fisher and by special
arrangement with the University of Idaho Press.
The Idaho Center for the Book will be home to Fisher's fiction
and non-fiction works, which will be available in hardback and
paperback, said to Tom Trusky, director of the ICB. Fisher's works
include "Mountain Man," on which the movie "Jeremiah Johnson"
starring Robert Redford was based; the Harper Prize winning "Children
of God"; and "Gold Camps of Idaho."
Fisher biographer Tim Woodward noted that Fisher's early works
created a new regional fiction. "He wrote the first Idaho novels to
be recognized outside the state," Woodward said.
"Vardis Fisher is in a class with Wallace Stegner who happened to
be Fisher's student," observed Alan Virta, head of special
collections at the BSU Albertsons Library.
"The Idaho Center for the Book is a natural home for Fisher's
writings," according to Trusky, "because he was a native Idahoan
and spent most of his career in Idaho."
The ICB is dedicated to preserving and promoting biblioculture of the Gem
State. Revenue from the sale of Fisher's works will be used to
support Idaho Center for the Book activities statewide.
To order copies of Fisher's works, call the BSU Bookstore at 208-
385-4031 in-state or 1-800 992-TEXT out-of-state.
