Artist Book Collection at The Museum of Modern Art

I am responding to recent comments and queries about the Artist Book
Collection at The Museum of Modern Art Library.   This important
collection is cataloged in the RLIN database and may be consulted by
making an appointment with the Museum Library:  212-709-9433.   Although
the Library is closed during the month of July, public hours for the
balance of the year are 11:00 to 5:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and

A bit of recent history regarding this collection might be of interest to
the list.   In 1993 the Museum expanded its existing artist book
collection by purchasing the Franklin Furnace archive of artist books.
The merger of the collections has required extensive processing and
cataloging; tasks which are being accomplished with the help of  a Mellon
Foundation Grant.  We hope that the integration will be completed this

The resulting  Museum of Modern Art/Franklin Furnace/Artist Book
Collection (ca. 12,000 titles) is one of the largest public collections of
artist books in existence.   Regrettably, however, it is shelved off-site
and same-day retrieval of material is not possible at present.
Individuals wanting to consult artist books should announce their
intention when making Library appointments since it is usually  necessary
to schedule more than one visit to effectively make use of the Artist Book
