Conservation Assistant
New York Public Library

The New York Public Library has an exceptional opportunity available
for an experienced Conservation Assistant.

Under the supervision of the Head of the Conservation Lab, the
successful candidate will perform a variety of conservation
treatments including book end paper repairs; recasing of bound
volumes; encapsulation and post binding; deacidification; production
of phase boxes; drop spine boxes and other protective enclosures;
and processing of commercial library rebinding. Works with
adhesives, solvents, and chemicals used in treatment operations.
Completes written treatment records.  Assists in processing of
materials and coordinating workflow.  May be required to participate
in disaster response operations which may include mandatory
overtime. Participates in seminars and demonstrations as
appropriate. Performs normal lab maintenance procedures.

Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree and a
demonstrated knowledge of current book and paper conservation
treatment and protective enclosure fabrication techniques with at
least 2 years of conservation experience; or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.  Successfully demonstrated
experience using standard conservation equipment, tools and
materials as demonstrated by examples of work.  Demonstrated
knowledge of the physical characteristics of library materials.
