A workshop on publishers's canvassing books in 19th-century America

Professor Keith Arbour of the Univ. of South Alabama will hold a workshop
on the artifactual significance of the canvassing books used by traveling
book salesmen in the 19th century. These books are important documents of
the ways in which the business of the book was conducted. As salesmen (and
women) attempted to subscribe potential customers, their canvassing books
gave them everything they needed to make their pitch: binding styles,
illustrations, costs, selling points, and general advice on how to sell
door-to-door. Many extant canvassing books even contain manuscript sub-
scription lists, allowing scholars to glimpse who it was that actually
bought the finished product.
