The Ultimate Broadside Workshop

One Broadside: Five Ways
The Ultimate Broadside Workshop

Saturday and Sunday, July 12, 9-4; July 13, 9-5

The Broadside has a long and rich history as a broadcast medium through
history. It is a loose and flexible medium for exploration of letterpress
type and image handling. In this two-day workshop participants view the
broadside in its many forms. The first day, participants design and
produce a broadside of a Diane Di Prima poem for distribution at her
Saturday evening reading. On Sunday, four distinct broadside designs using
this same poem will be developed, printed and collated into a portfolio.

Instructor Felicia Rice is an artist, typographer and publisher whose work
has earned her many honors: the Elliston Book Award at the Leipzig Book
Fair, and the French Ministry of Culture. She lectures and exhibits
internationally, and currently teaches courses in the book arts and
publishing at UC Santa Cruz, where she directs the UCSC Extension Graphics
Program.

An intermediate class.
Prerequisite: Beginning letterpress class, or equivalent.

Cost: $150; bring $10 materials fee to class
