Waxed embroidery thread (cotton or linen) works well. I only use it for
non-archival projects, (i.e. notebooks for class or lecture notetaking). You
can get the beeswax in small squares for about $1 at fabric/craft stores,
such as Cloth World, etc.

Quilt stores carry machine embroidery thread (cotton and linen), and these
can be twisted and waxed also.
