BOOK STRUCTURES

These ongoing workshops are intended for Graphic Designers, Printmakers and
Photographers- - - Any artist generating forms which can be directed toward
the handmade book.

Phenomenal primary structures will be demonstrated then built by the
participants. Some include the Kelm wire edge binding, the thermo-bond
non-sewn case and the basic English style case. These structures wholly
support the ideas of the visual book. As the sessions evolve, refinements
will be added along with additional book and box structures. Included will
be invaluable information on adhesives, pigments, gilding, leather
bookbinding, paper surface design and much more. This collected material is
largely unavailable anywhere else.

Timothy C. Ely began making books as early as 1957. An interest in UFO
images, alchemy, comic books and odd religious arcana lead him from
painting and design into bookbinding. An NEA grant took him to Japan and
Europe for training in the traditional methods of book fabrication. He has
collaborated with ethno-botanist Terence McKenna on Synesthesia, a limited
edition book published in 1992 by Granary Books in New York. In 1994 he
was awarded an NEA Western States Arts Federation Grant. His first trade
book, The Flight into Egypt was published in 1995 by Chronicle Books of San
Francisco. He resides in Oregon where he maintains a bindery & library.

FALL 1997 CLASS SCHEDULE

10 sessions for 10 consecutive weeks (up from 8 weeks!), 3 hours each.
Wednesday and Thursday classes: 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Saturday class: 9:00
AM to 12:00 PM.

FALL sessions begin Sept. 10

Note: Groups 1 and 2 are ongoing classes, but because classes are small and

studio space.

Group 3 is a new section added this fall, so will focus on beginning
techniques, though all levels are welcome. Since spaces go fast, reserve now!

Fee: $300 per student for 10 weeks

Includes materials and the use of studio tools (personal tools are welcome,
but not necessary. Just come!)

If specialty papers are desired, the student will bring as needed
