Second Edition, 4to, xvii, 486pp., coloured vignette on title, 46 plates (2
coloured, 2 folding), illustrs., in the text, 3 facsimiles of hornbooks
(one of oak, one of card and one of ivory) contained in a pocket at the
end, orig. cloth, lower hinge slightly torn, head and tail of spine a
little frayed, leather label on spine rubbed and chipped, uncut, t.e.g.

Sheppard, The History of the Hornbook. "The History of the Horn-Book was
undoubtedly Tuer's magnum opus. The first edition was published in two
volumes, in 1896. The one-volume edition is the most useful... retains all
the essential material of the first edition but had added another
chapter... dealing with twenty additional horn-books and giving valuable
extra information. It has never been superseded."
