I received this from a colleague in St. Petersburg, and thought I'd
share it with you.

  In February, library scholars from around the world converged
on Saint-Petersburg to mark the 10th anniversary of one of the
most devastating fires in library history. The Library of the
Russian Academy of Sciences located next to St.-Petersburg
University on Vasilyevsky Island, has suffered three fires during
it's 284-year history. The most devastating conflagration by far
was the one that consumed almost 300,000 books, manuscripts
and journals on the night of Feb. 14 to 15, 1988. Ten years after
the fire, there is much left to do. Only 15 percent of the foreign
books and 40 percent of the Russian collection have been
