Dartmouth College Library seeks an experienced conservator for the newly
created position of Collections Conservator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  Reporting to the Preservation Services Librarian, the
incumbent plans, coordinates and oversees the evaluation and treatment of the
general and special collections material held in the Dartmouth College Library
system.  Hires, trains and supervises conservation technicians and student
assistants in the conservation treatments of paper-based materials.
Establishes and maintains quality control of conservation treatments performed
within the library system.  Performs complex treatments on special collections
materials from the 10th - 20th century.  Assists the Preservation Services
Librarian with long range planning, preservation education programs, and
disaster recovery.  Serves on library wide committees and in the absence of the
Preservation Librarian acts as supervisor.

THE COLLEGE AND THE LIBRARY:  The Dartmouth College Library, established in
1769, is a system of nine libraries, each housing collections in specific
subject areas, and serving undergraduate and graduate programs in the College
of Arts and Sciences, the Tuck School of Business Administration, the Thayer
School of Engineering, and the Dartmouth Medical School.  The library
collection includes over 2 million printed volumes, 21,000 journal
subscriptions, 2.3 million microforms, 67,000 audiovisual titles, and 164,000
maps.  The library is also home to the Book Arts Workshop.  Baker Library, the
Social Sciences and Humanities Library, is undergoing a major expansion and
renovation which will include the design and construction of a state of the art
conservation lab.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate degree in the conservation of books and/or archival
library materials with 3 yrs. of book binding and conservation experience in a
research library; or the equivalent.  MLS desirable.  Demonstrated knowledge of
conservation principles, practices, and procedures.  Knowledge of bookbinding
history and book structure.  Demonstrated experience in treatment decision
making.  Knowledge of commercial binding methods and standards.  Background in
general and organic chemistry strongly preferred.  Experience with designing a
lab desirable.  Strong organization skills; excellent verbal and written
communication skills; ability to work effectively with staff of the college
libraries and to direct the work of others.  Knowledge of computers and
software applications.

SALARY & BENEFITS:  Rank and salary commensurate with experience and
qualifications, with a minimum salary of $33,500 for Librarian II; full
benefits package including 22 vacation days, comprehensive health insurance,
TIAA/CREF, and relocation assistance.
