UKPounds 10 million missal saved for the nation

THE Sherborne Missal, a Gothic manuscript believed to be worth more
than UKPounds10 million, has been saved for the nation after
The Times revealed that its owner was considering
selling it to cover an inheritance tax bill.

Lord McIntosh of Haringey, Arts spokesman, told the House of Lords
yesterday that the illuminated prayerbook had been donated to the
State in lieu of inheritance tax owed by the Duke of Northumberland
after the death of his elder brother. The missal will stay in the
British Library where it has been on loan.

The Duke said last night: "It's always sad when something has to go
but, faced with huge taxes, you need to keep the estate going and
employ people."
