Creasing is the least of the problems in cross-grain binding. More
significant is the effect of humidity changes. The paper can't expand on the
folded and bound edge (head to tail), but can expand out the foredge. With
grain parallel to spine the paper expands and contracts as conditions
require. With cross-grain binding it expands at the foredge but is
constrained at the spine, so the book warps and the pages wrinkle. You see
this in a lot of commercial books, where even if they know better they do it
because it's cheaper (some sheets or rolls of paper fold down to more pages
of the size they need against the grain {not to be confused with Housman}).
