The Hand-Printed Book: Design & Production,  is a special class offered at
City College of San Francisco this fall. Beginning, intermediate and
advanced students are welcome at this innovative class, which offers
instruction in bookmaking, letterpress printing, and relief printmaking
taught be three instructors.
        Kathleen Walkup has been teaching typography, printing and
bookmaking in the Bay Area for 20 years. She directs the Book Arts Program
at Mills College in Oakland, and has taught typography and bookmaking at
City College for the past two years. Robert Pinetti has been a letterpress
printer and typesetter in San Francisco for many years, where he has also
taught production at City College. He has organized the letterpress studio
and City College, making hand typesetting and printing a reality there.
Printmaker and book artist Leona Christie recently won a Jurors Award at
Pacific Print, Palo Alto, and exhibited in Shapeshifting: Transformations
in the Art of the Book,. Leona currently teaches at Diablo Valley College
and at Berkeleys Kala Institute in addition to teaching drawing and
printmaking classes at City College.
        The course will cover a number of areas, including the form and
content of books, basic book design, letterpress printing, relief
printmaking, and the recent history of limited edition and artists books.
        The first class meets Thursday, August 20th, 1998, in V140, Visual
Arts Building, 50 Phelan Avenue, San Francisco. The class meets Tuesday
and Thursday, 69pm. The cost is $36.00 ($12.00 per unit) plus a $15.00 lab
fee. The class is jointly sponsored by the Fine Arts and Graphic
Communications Departments. All students must be enrolled at City College.
