Bay Area evening typography class

City College of San Francisco has just announced an evening section of its
class on beginning typography as part of its Graphic Communications
offerings. The class, 53A: Typography, will be held on Tuesday evenings
from 6-10pm on the Phelan campus beginning this Tuesday, February 2nd and
continuing until May 25th, 1999. The class is a credit class; course
pre-requisites or some experience in graphic design, visual arts or visual
literacy is suggested. The class is taught by Kathleen Walkup, instructor
in Graphic Communications at City College and Director of the Book Arts
Program at Mills College, Oakland.
      This course focuses on the history of western typography, with
emphasis on type nomenclature, type classification, legibility issues and
typeface choice. Enrollment permitting, there will be an opportunity for
some basic work in Citys letterpress studio, and there will be one or two
sessions of instruction in fundamental non-adhesive binding structures for
a project connected with the class. There will be one or more field trips.
There is no computer lab time connected to this class; all assignments may
be completed without using a computer if the student chooses.
