News from the Lone Star Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers

Lone Star Chapter News:

The Lone Star Chapter's planned exhibit for 1999 are design bindings of
the text, "Heaven on Earth", selected writings by the American naturalist
John Muir and printed by LSC co-president Randolph Bertin (who is expected
to be the father of twins any day now) of the Press Intermezzo in Austin.
Thirty GBW members have made intents to participate in this show which
will open on July 17 at the Botanical Research Institute in Ft. Worth,
Texas, and travel to the Printing History Museum in Houston, opening on
September 11, and finally to the Perry Castaneda Library , UT Texas in
Austin, opening October 15. A reminder to all participants: Finished
bindings are due May 15, 1999, in order to prepare a catalog. Questions

Hands On Bookbinding, Smithville, Texas.
Learn methods for working more efficiently when binding multiples by hand
while working on an actual quarter leather edition during this four day
intensive workshop. Limited to five students with some binding experience.
Students will receive a copy of the 26 lettered edition, Heaven on Earth,
selected writings by John Muir and published for the Lone Star Chapter,

NOTE: As of this writing the workshop is full but if there is sufficient
interest it could be repeated.


The Lone Star Chapter announces the publication of a special lettered
edition of Heaven on Earth, selected writings of the American naturalist
John Muir printed by LSC member Randolph Bertin of Press Intermezzo and
illustrated with numerous wood engravings by east Texas artist  Charles
Jones. (LSC). This 140 page, 8 1/4' x 6"  text has been printed
letterpress with polymer plates on Biblio paper, and will be bound under
the supervision of Priscilla Spitler (LSC) in a rounded, quarter-leather
case binding of tan Harmatan goatskin with gold stamping on the spine, and
boards covered in a warm red Japanese cloth with endpapers of Bugra paper.
Each book will be housed in a slipcase covered in olive Japanese cloth.
Only 20 of the 26 copies are offered for sale at $175 each including
