If you want a heat patina, you will have to completely finish your piece
(anneal, pickle, form, drill, etc.) and then torch it until you get the
desired look, but do not pickle this time.  At that point it will be soft
because the torching anneals it again.  The finish can be waxed with
Butcher's Wax or coated with a clear spray to prevent oxidation, which would
change the colors you made.
