Even with bird feathers it is best to "soften" them with a little immersion
into hot/boiling water prior to cutting, this to prevent shattering of the
shaft. The material of the porcupine quill is only slightly different than
the shaft of a birds feather (that is an interlinked multilayering of cutin)
so this technique should aid in developing the correct cuts necessary to
creating a nib.
