San Francisco--The twenty-seventh annual Hand Bookbinders of California
Members' Exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday, November 4,
6:00-8:00 p.m., in the Skylight Gallery of the Main Library, Civic Center,
San Francisco. The exhibition, featuring the work of amateurs as well as
internationally recognized bookbinders, will run through December 31, 1999.

After a number of years at other venues throughout the San Francisco Bay
Area, the Hand Bookbinders show was welcomed home by the San Francisco Public
Library, where exhibitions have taken place since 1993. Visitors should expect
to be inspired by the array of books on display. The annual Hand Bookbinders
of California Members' Exhibition presents examples of refined gold-tooled
leather binding, the avant-garde artist's book, and innovative designs that
range from the traditional to the unexpected.

Membership in the Hand Bookbinders of California is open to anyone with an
interest in books and bookbinding. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of
the month, from September through June, and a newsletter, The Gold Leaf, is
published regularly. For more information on the Hand Bookbinders, please
contact Margaret Johnson at 415.673.7130.

This free event is sponsored by the Book Arts and Special Collections Center
of the San Francisco Public Library. For our hours or other information,
please call the Center at 415.557.4560.
