Bookish Weekend in Claremont

For those southern Californians or visitors on the list who may be
planning to attend the Frederic Goudy Lecture and/or the Clasps-making
Workshop with  Franklin Mowery this Saturday and Sunday, November 6 and
7, let me remind you of these and other book related events at Scripps
College in Claremont this weekend. The two exhibits described below can
also be viewed until early December.

Come to Claremont early to visit the current exhibition at the Denison
Library, Scripps College Campus. "Ediciones Dos Amigos" showcases the
beautifully designed, printed and illustrated books in limited editions
produced by  Ediciones Dos Amigos in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Originally
shown at the Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University from June
through September 1999, this exhibition features texts by South American
authors such as Borges, Guiraldes, Lugones, Molinari and Neruda
illustrated by South American artists including Aberastury, Badii,
Carballo, and Ripoll. The exhibition may be viewed through November 30.
Hours this weekend are Saturday, Noon-5pm and Sunday, Noon-11pm. For

In addition the 1998-99 Guild of Book Workers exhibition, "ABECEDARIUM,
An exhibit of Alphabet books" featuring the work of forty participating
GBW members will open on Saturday, November 6 at the Clark Humanities
Museum at Scripps College. Frank Mowery, Goudy Lecturer and Past
President of the Guild of Book Workers, will be the guest of honor at a
reception from 4:30-6pm in the Clark Humanities Museum. Sponsored by the
Scripps College Press, the reception is free and open to the public. For

Frederic W. Goudy Lecture. "Bound and Closed: An Overview of Fine and
Historical Bindings with Clasps from the Folger Shakespeare Library".
Franklin Mowery, Head Conservator at the Folger. Saturday, November 6,
7:30 pm, Humanities Auditorium, Scripps College. Free and Open to the

Workshop, "Clasps  and Bosses, a Guide to Their Manufacture" with Frank
Mowery, Saturday, November 6 and Sunday, November 7, 9:30-4:30 each day
at the Scripps College Press. Fee: $150+$20 for cost of materials.
Reservations required.

Dinner with Frank Mowery. November 6, 6 pm. Wilbur Hall, Scripps
College. $19.50 per person.  Reservations required.
