The Princeton University Library, one of the world's most
distinguished research libraries, seeks an energetic and imaginative
curator to oversee the holdings, resources, and staff of its
Graphic Arts Collection located in the Harvey S. Firestone
Library. The position manages a significant collection of
prints and drawings, photographs, fine bindings, realia, and
the Sinclair Hamilton Collection of American Illustrated Books.
The curator also assists in the management and exposition of
other visual resources located throughout the Department of
Rare Books and Special Collections. More information may be

Description: The Curator of Graphic Arts is one of nine
curatorial positions responsible for developing and interpreting
collections in Princeton's Department of Rare Books and Special
Collections. Responsibilities include collection development,
reference services, active participation in instruction through
contact with faculty and students, exhibitions and publications
designed to educate and involve users on campus and beyond,
establishment of cataloging and conservation priorities, active
engagement with donors and fundraising. The curator also
develops web-based finding aids and on-line exhibitions.
Currently the position oversees one support staff person. We
expect that the curator will also participate in and help to
manage a major project to address longstanding acquisitions
and cataloging backlogs throughout the Department. For

Qualifications: An ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science
degree or equivalent combination of education and professional
library experience, and at least three years' employment in a
research library are required. Candidate must demonstrate
knowledge of the history of graphic arts and of printed books,
both in terms of course work and through relevant publications
and experience. The ability to communicate clearly and
effectively with faculty, donors, students and other members
of the Princeton University community is also mandatory.
The successful candidate must present evidence of training
experience or classroom instruction and development of on-line
finding aids or other web documents. Preference will be given
to candidates with formal training and achievements in
organizing, exhibiting, and digitizing visual materials for
instructional uses. Candidates with a second master's in a
relevant discipline (e.g. art history, English literature) and
some experience with descriptive cataloging in the MARC
format are desired. Experience with typography, handset
type, and hand printing would also be beneficial since this
position provides support for the Typography Studio that is
part of Princeton's Visual Arts Program. General familiarity
with computer applications in special collections, active
participation in appropriate professional organizations, and
a record of successful supervisory responsibility are also desirable.

Benefits: Twenty-four (24) vacation days a year, plus eleven

Salary & Rank: Dependent upon experience and qualifications.
