Support Press at Colorado College [From Betty Bright, brig0022@tc.umn.edu]

Concerning The Future of the Press at Colorado College

In light of Jim Trissel's death last August, Colorado College is currently
considering whether or not to continue teaching and publishing at The Press
at Colorado College. NOW is the time to write to the College, in
appreciation for what Jim Trissel created, as well as in support for the
College's role in higher education from teaching bookmaking through this
important program.

In 20 years of teaching and printing, Trissel and his students published
nearly 40 books as well as poetry broadsides. Through his efforts, a
generation of students immersed themselves in the literary life of a book
through the challenges of typographical design, along with an understanding
of color, image, and form.

In addition to the books themselves, which underwrote the operation of the
Press, Trissel organized a conference sponsored by Colorado College in
1988, for members of the international organization of Collegiate Book Arts

In addition, Trissel helped to ensure the future of fine printing by
recognizing the applicability of photo-polymer plates to computer software,
about which he repeatedly wrote and lectured. The studio and library
facility that he assembled over two decades, would be difficult if not
impossible to recreate elsewhere. It is a model for liberal arts education,
interdisciplinary and collaborative.

Please address your letters of support to Prof. David Mason, Department of
English, 14 East Cache la Poudre Street, Colorado Springs, CO 80903-3298;
or at: dmason@coloradocollege.edu. Address the letter to Mason or to
President Kathryn Morhman; he'll pass all correspondence on to her.

Other questions, please contact Brian Molanphy at the Press, at 719/38
