Temporary Position at Princeton

Princeton University Library seeks applicants for a 15-month fulltime
position of Conservation Technician.  This position will be assigned to a
grant-funded project focusing on the preservation of some of the papers of
F. Scott Fitzgerald.  The Technician will carry out spray deacidification,
repair and rehousing on approximately 30,000 sheets from the collection
within the start and end dates of the project.  These activities will
include: testing where appropriate for ink solubility; documentation of
sheets with severe tears and previous cellophane tape repairs; removal of
cellophane tape when removal is simple and straightforward (a paper
conservator will perform all other tape removals); and sleeving every sheet
into polyester, and refoldering and reboxing the sleeved sheets into
acid-free folders and boxes.

Qualifications:  knowledge of current and accepted preservation and
conservation practices; experience using a wide range of equipment, tools
and materials used to preserve and conserve library materials; production
experience with spray deacidification or similar spray systems; experience
in collection-level conservation rehousing projects; experience executing a
range of minor-to-moderate paper conservation treatments; excellent hand to
eye coordination and manual dexterity; high degree of organizational,
managerial and communication skills; ability to plan, organize and complete
work in a timely manner; exceptional ability to build good working
relationships with others; exceptional ability to work independently as
well as to follow instructions; ability to work under pressure at times and
to meet tight schedules; display a high degree of sensitivity, good
judgment and common sense when handling fragile materials; ability to keep
detailed records and statistics; exceptional display of creativity,
dependability and resourcefulness; and good computer skills.

Term: March 1, 2000 to May 31, 2001.

Benefits: Twenty-two (22) vacation days a year, plus eleven (11) paid
holidays. Pension plan, group life insurance, health coverage insurance,
and disability insurance.

Salary:  Pay Grade D : $21,564.40
