1999 Florida Aritsts' Book Prize

               1999 Florida Artists' Book Prize

The Bienes Center for the Literary Arts (Broward County Library,
Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and the Florida Center for the Book are pleased
to announce that:

Susan M. Urbanek, an art professor from Oakland Park, Florida, is
the 1999 winner of the $2,000 annual Florida Artists' Book Prize.

Her winning book, entitled "We Come Out As We Are Needed," uses
narrative and photographs taken in Ft. Lauderdale to tell a story of
political protest. The work was judged to be "of exceptional quality
both for its visual appeal and its captivating yet vexing narrative."

Urbanek's book was selected from 28 submissions by a panel that
included Ruth & Marvin Sackner of the Sackner Archive of Concrete
and Visual Poetry (Miami Beach, FL); Mata & Arthur Jaffe of the Jaffe
Collection of Books as Aesthetic Objects at the Library of Florida
Atlantic University (Boca Raton, FL); and Barbara Young, Art Services
Librarian and artists' book specialist at Miami-Dade Public Library
(Miami, FL)

The $2,000 award will be presented during a ceremony at 6 p.m.
March 9, 2000, in the Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, 6th Floor,
Broward County Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL

The 28 entires in this year's contest are on exhibit in the Bienes
Center now through April 1st.
