Reputedly Illiterate/Castle Books, Boise, ID

The American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Idaho Center for the Book
are pleased to announce "Reputedly Illiterate:  The Art Books of James
Castle," an exhibition of 100 Castle books and artifacts at AIGA opening 29
March through 13 May.

A lecture by exhibition curator Tom Trusky, "Gumby & the Rotarian:  James
Castle & the Art of Reading," will be given 30 March at AIGA.

Reputedly deaf, mute, illiterate and mentally challenged, this exhibition
illustrates Castle was a gifted artist/bookmaker who could, in fact, read
and write.  The Self-Taught Idahoan developed a variety of visual systems
to  communicate, including codes, calendars, and letterforms.  Denied
bookmaking and art supplies, he found or made his own--including ink from
soot and saliva, pens from sharpened twigs and sticks.  For over fifty
years, Castle devoted himself to the making of books, drawings and

Translations of Castle's visual narratives will be provided at the
exhibition; viewers will be encouraged to interpret the artist's calendar
and code books.  The video documentary, "Dreamhouse:  the Art & Life of
James Castle," will be screened daily (closed captioning available).
"Dreamhouse," an exhibit catalogue and six hand-sewn facsimile Castle books
contained in the artist's preferred archival storage unit, the (designer)
gunnysack, will be available for purchase.
