New England book events

On May 6th there will be a meeting of the NE chapter of the Guild of
Book Workers at North Bennet St. School, 39 North Bennet St., Boston.
The presenter will be Per Cullhed, a Swedish Master Bookbinder, and
senior conservator and head of conservation at Uppsala University
Library. Mr. Cullhed will be speaking about the recovery efforts
following the fire at the Linkoping Muncicipal Library on Sept. 20,
1996. Following the fire about a thousand volumes arrived at the
Uppsala library for treatment, in the course of which a new technique
for the rebacking of tight back leather bindings was developed. Mr.
Cullhed will also give a demonstration of manual paper splitting as a
conservation treatment.
The Guild welcomes visiting members from other chapters and new
arrivals in the field interested in the Guild and its activities.

Reminders about two other book events in the area:

At the Melrose Public Library, 69 W. Emerson St., there is an on-going
exhibition of bindings done by a group of graduates from the North
Bennet St. School. The exhibition will be coming down at the end of

May 20 at Quercus Press in Waltham, the Letterpress Guild of New
England and the NE chapter of the Guild of Book Workers invite you to
clean out your studio and come to the Swap Meet. Come meet the folks who
are just your type (and if they aren't you can give them the brush (for
two dollars) off).
