Dear Book Arts Members,

For Bibliophile and typography enthusiasts, Oak Knoll Press, a scholarly
publisher, has recently published -

                                            HOW TYPOGRAPHY HAPPENS
                                                          Ruari McLean

The emergence of the typographer as a professional is examined by one of
the best-known names in the field. Ruari McLean has designed hundreds of
books for some of the most prominent publishers of this century. This
work is based on his Sandars Lectures delivered at Cambridge University in
the 1980s. Looking at the work of well known typographers in England,
America, France and Germany, McLean explores the development of typography
from the seventeenth century to the 1980s. From pen-drawn calligraphy
covers to Pre-Raphaelite book pages to German Art Nouveau to European
state-of-the-art design, many of the illustrations presented in this book
are unusual and mostly unfamiliar to the general public. Co-published
with The British Library.

Ruari McLean is a professional designer and a leading authority on the
history of book design. He is the author of many publications, including
Modern Book Design, The Thames & Hudson Manual of Typography, Victorian
Book Design and Colour Printing, and Jan Tschichold, Typographer.
