This hands-on primer in papermaking introduces the basic steps in the papermaking
process: preparing pulp, then pulling, couching, pressing, and drying sheets of
paper varying in size and shape. You will create many handmade sheets of paper
exploring a variety of creative papermaking techniques such as pulp lamination,
embedding organic or man-made materials, and pulp inclusions. Discussions will
include papermaker’s tools and the history of hand papermaking.

MEETING THE PAGE  (One Week Intensive Workshop: Sunday, July 16—Friday, July 21)
This exciting week is devoted to making book art by exploring the ways in which
the elements of paper can be translated into words, images, and textures.
Sessions are designed to expand the artist/papermaker’s range of vision and
adeptness in working with wet pulp; to manipulate surfaces with color, texture,
and image; and to  create artist book structures. Each session of this week-long
intensive may be taken as a separate workshop. The week begins with a Sunday
brunch at Seastone Papers before the afternoon session. The regularly scheduled
late afternoon and evening events include art openings, beach picnics, and studio
visits with island artists who work with paper. Cost for the week : $545
(includes all materials)

Experience the ways in which a variety of decorative effects can create surface
design on handmade paper in the wet pulp stage. In addition to pulling, couching,
and pressing sheets of flax, abaca, and cotton fibers, you will explore multiple
dipped fibers and understand what spectacular designs result from using
coagulants with iridescent and pigmented pulp. Learn how to work with pulp veils,
paint with pulp, and produce controlled manipulations, often achieving the
unexpected. The final outcome in pulp is a visual language that is a narrative
itself or the background setting for book structures.

Explore surface realities. The visual language that may propel a narrative can be
created in pulp with the hand, eye, and heart . By combining image making in pulp
with wet binding methods, you will explore the book structure. Create concertina
combinations and learn how to make pockets, doors, windows and shaped books—all
in the wet pulp stage.

Create one-of-a kind image and emulsion transfers by expanding traditional
understanding of a photographic image using both a Polaroid slide printer and
camera. Extend your imagination as you produce ethereal, fresco-like images. The
addictive pull becomes apparent as you manipulate and transfer images to a
variety of paper surfaces. There are infinite possibilities when you alter the
image or change the surface       receptor.

Articulate the mood, sounds, feelings, and intention of your work and
incorporate those words onto or into the paper. Using either innovative or
conventional  form—poetry, prose, or free form expression—let words embellish the
texture and enhance the character of your book. The first of two writing
workshops uses examples, open discussion, and writing exercises to illustrate the
relationship between meanings and the visual and audio aspect of words. During
the second workshop, the relationship between your work and yourself will be the
subject of a word memory composition. The result will be fused into your books
according to your creative invention.

Merge paper, image, and language when you glue, sew, or wire soft and hard covers
for book forms. Learn about adhesives, variations of the traditional Japanese
stab binding, and innovative ways to build on the concept of your artist book

Transfer your doodles into personal symbols. Discover how many ways you can look
at one thing. Learn to design, carve, and create relief prints to meet the page
with pattern. You can blend, mask, change color, repeat, or tessellate your
images as you continue to expand the narrative sequence of your book structures.

This workshop is designed for you— the classroom teacher, art teacher, or someone
with an interest in an arts approach to integrating curriculum through writing,
papermaking, and bookmaking. Employing a variety of approaches and formats moving
paper to book, you will create several books: a book of handmade paper, a
collaborative book, a sketchbook journal, and the simple one-sheet-of-paper book.
One focus will include step-by-step classroom techniques in forming decorative
patterns and imagery in paper, pressing paper, and drying paper. You will learn
how to integrate papermaking with writing, computer printing, and the ancient art
of Japanese bookbinding.  Another session will focus on creating a sketchbook
journal that integrates science, art, and writing. Writing techniques will be
discussed and explored with all book formats including a versatile collaborative
book that can be useful in vocabulary review, history facts, or math problems.
The final products will be books of purpose and beauty. PDPs available for

Sun. to Mon,  August 6- 7,  10:00-4:00
Take handmade paper from the 2-dimensional to the 3-dimensional. Using high
shrinkage pulp along with metal, reeds, and fabric, you will begin forming
sculptural objects from paper. You will use various ways of pulp application such
as pouring, spraying, and piecing.  The armature can become part of the finished
piece or can be removed and used multiple times. These techniques are perfect for
creating a hollow seamless paper form that is as light as a feather.

Tues. to Wed., August 15-16, 10:00-4:00
Working two dimensionally with cotton and abaca fiber, explore the painterly
possibilities of pigmented pulp. Examine contemporary pulp painting artwork.
Then, mix your own colors and experiment with different consistencies of pulp.
Layer regular and overbeaten pulp onto a base sheet using viscous mediums with
collage and stencil techniques to develop your ideas of image or design. The
flexibility and spontaneity of this medium is amazing.
