"Books Illustrated: Text, Image, and Culture 1770-1930"

Dear Book Arts member,

For book illustrators, book arts enthusiasts and 19th-Century book=20
historians, Oak Knoll Press, a scholarly publisher, is soon to publish -

          Text, Image, and Culture
                      1770 - 1930

       Edited by Catherine J. Golden

Leading scholars from the United States and England analyze the rich=20
interplay of illustration with text to exemplify the means by which visual=
culture evolved. Contained within eight new essays, arranged=20
chronologically, scholars examine the visual insurgence that emerged from=20
1770-1930 by means of analyzing illustrations from novels, plays, poetry,=20
ballets, and children's books. In addition, these notable scholars examine=
the impact of book covers and jackets, prints, bindings, papers, title=20
pages, and paintings with American and English readers spanning 160 years.

This work will bring the reader closer to the "aura" of originality of=20
these early reproducible art forms and enrich understanding of our=20
pictorial heritage.

Distinguished contributors to the book are: Jonathan Bate on Shakespeare,=20
Sarah Webster Goodwin on Romantic Ballet, Robert L. Patten and Catherine J.=
Golden on Cruikshank, Elizabeth K. Helsinger on Rossetti, James A. W.=20
Heffernan on Beardsley, Ruth Copans on American Women Illustrators and=20
David H. Porter on The Hogarth Press.

Catherine J. Golden is Associate Professor of English at Skidmore College=20
in Saratoga Springs, New York. Her essays and reviews on Victorian=20
literature and art have appeared in Victorian Studies, Victorian Poetry and=
