1. CALL FOR ARTISTS AND CALLIGRAPHERS
TREADWELL, NY=96 Word Thursdays/Bright Hill Press announces a
call for visual artists to exhibit their work in the Word and Image Nation=
Art Exhibit at the =93 Speaking the Words Poets and Writers Tour and
Festival 2000: A River of Words.=94 The eighth annual tour and festival i=
held in Delaware County, New York, on the western slopes of the famed
Catskill Mountain region (3 miles south of Treadwell, NY, on Delaware
Co. Route 16) August 11, 12, and 13.
The opening reception for the art show will be held at 7 p.m. on
Saturday August 12, in the Big Blue Barn Gallery at Bright Hill Farm,
during which the artists will read from their selections, and then all tho=
attending may take part in a choral reading of Amy Lowell=92s poems
=93Summer=94 and =93Roads.=94 The show will continue through August 30
(open on weekends and by appointment). Exhibiting artists may attend
the Speaking the Words Tour and Festival free, and each artist will
receive a copy of the 40-page Festival program and catalog.
For the all-media, nonjuried exhibit, artists and calligraphers will b=
asked to interpret a poem or fragment of fiction (no longer than 20 lines)=
in any medium. The poems or fiction fragments will be typeset and
displayed on panels adjacent to the visual art. Cotton gloves will be
provided for handling artists=92 books; we do NOT have facilities to
display artists=92 books under glass or plexiglass.
The REQUIRED registration form for the =93Word and Image=94 show
may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to
Word Thursdays, P.O. Box 193, Treadwell, NY 13846 or by emailing WT
at The deadline for mailing or delivering completed forms is July 15.
There is no fee for hand-delivered art work, which may be delivered on
Thursday, August 10, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. However, there is a fee
for shipped art work=96 $15 for up to two shipped works, plus sufficient
postage for return (shipping containers and packing must be sturdy).
Speaking the Words Poets and Writers Tour and Festival 2000
features performances and discussions of their work by poets Paul
Genega, of Stuyvesant, NY; Loss Pequeno Glazier, of Williamsville, NY;
D. Nurkse, of Brooklyn, NY; playwright Lidia Ramirez of New York, NY;
and poet/writer Sharyn J. Skeeter of Hartford, CT; readings by the
winners of the Word Thursdays Share the Words Catskill Region High-
School Poetry Competition, participants in the Word Thursdays
Workshops for Kids, Dead Poets Readings, Senior Citizens Poetry
Recitation, Open Readings, Storytelling Sessions, and other
Speaking the Words Poets and Writers Tour and Festival is made
possible, in part,with public funds from the New York State Council on
the Arts, a state agency; the Catskill Watershed Cooperation; the A.C.
Molinari Foundation; Stewart=92s Shops; area businesses; and Word
