Lone Star Chapter, Guild of Book Workers will be holding its annual meeting
in Smithville, Texas, on Saturday, June 16. The meeting is being organized
in conjunction with a two-day workshop with reknowned paper engineer and
pop-up book artist, Carol Barton, which will take place that weekend at the

The program will begin at 4:00 pm, at the end of the first day's class,
followed by a slide lecture on pop-up structures given by Carol at 5:00pm.

Many Guild of Book Worker members may remember Carol Barton's expert
presentation on engineering pop-up structures at the GBW Standards meeting
a few years ago. A resident of Maryland, she is on the faculty of the
University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Recently, Carol has returned from
Italy where she received an award from the Bogliosco Fellowhip as
artist-in-residence south of Genove. During her stay, she began designing a
new book of architectural drawings with pop-up paper towers illuminated by
an incandescent bulb set in the spine structure. The book is to be produced
as a limited edition later this Spring.

Carol will be in Texas earlier in June to teach an intensive 4-day pop-up
book workshop at the Southwest School of Art & Craft in San Antonio on June
7-10. <www.swschool.org>
