BIENES CENTER FOR THE LITERARY ARTS (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

presents the following one-day workshops:

WORKSHOP I: HOWTO DESIGN AND BUILD A POP-UP

Instructor:   Roger Culbertson, Paper Engineer
Date:          Saturday, August 11, 2001 (Repeated August 25, 2001)
Time:          9:00 a.m - 5:00 p.m.
Tuition:       $45.00
Skill Level:  Beginning

A hands-on, step-by-step workshop on how to design and build pop-ups. It is=
 important for workshop participants to understand that developing pop-up d=
esign and engineering skills is a lengthy and dedicated processs. A one-day=
 workshop can only serve as an introduction to the materials and techniques=
 used to create pop-ups.

Morning Sessison: will be devoted to the basic principles and mechanics use=
d in pop-up design. Stock with printed dielines will be provided for partic=
ipants to practice cutting, scoring and gluing basic pop-ups.

Afternoon Sesssion: will be devoted to getting participants started on an o=
riginal pop-up design. As much one-on-one help as possible will be provided.


WORKSHOP II: PAPER & BOOKS ARTS

Instructors:   Thery McKinney & Linda Rollins
Date:            Saturday, August 18, 2001
Time:            9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.
Skill Level:    Beginning & Intermediate
Tuition:         $60.00 (includes $15.00 materials fee)

Morning Session: Orizomegami: The Japanese Art Form of Folding and Dying Pa=
per. Participants will explore the traditional Japanese decorative arts of =
orizomegami, itajime and shibori. All are techniques based on dying folded =
oriental papers to create subtle repetitive patterns.

Afternoon Session: A Multi-section Sewn Book (Modified Coptic Binding)
Participants will use the dyed papers created in the morning session to mak=
e covers for two books. The first will be a single section booklet with pri=
nted text about the workshop. The second will be a blank journal with multi=
ple sections and contrasting endpapers. Both books will then be sewn togeth=
er using a modified Coptic sewing structure.
