This is mylar - the industry standard for antiquarian books. Since mylar
covers are loose fitting, mold shouldn't be a problem, I would think. Mylar
covers not only protect the covers from wear and tear (particularly if they
are already fragile), but if the book is made of leather that has turned to
"red rot" the mylar covers help make the book handleable.
