Working in the Weissman Preservation Center under the direct supervision of
the Conservator for Houghton Library Collections, the Conservation
Technician for Special Collections treats materials held in special
collections throughout the Harvard College Library.


Education, experience, skills

College preferred. Training in book conservation through a formal training
program, or an apprenticeship required. Two years experience in a
recognized conservation facility following training. Superior manual
dexterity with emphasis on bookbinding skills, and demonstrated ability to
work with a high degree of accuracy and precision. Ability to work
independently with sustained concentration while performing complex tasks.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work within
established priorities and to achieve goals. Ability to adapt to change, to
analyze and solve problems, and to be flexible and work collaboratively.
Good communication and keyboard skills. Knowledge of the history of
binding, printing, and papermaking preferred. Special collections
experience preferred.


Duties and responsibilities

Prepares condition and treatment reports including photo documentation.
Carries out a range of routine and intermediate book conservation
treatments including repair of rare paper, cloth, vellum, and leather
bindings. Performs basic paper conservation. Designs and constructs
protective enclosures for special collections.  Assists in preparing
materials for contract boxing and commercial binding. Works on more complex
treatments under the direct supervision of a conservator. Maintains
inventories of supplies and tools. Participates in disaster recovery where
library collections are involved. Assists in carrying out condition
surveys, environmental monitoring and other duties as required.
