DESCRIPTION
An eight-day workshop with Alessandro Zanella at his private press
Ampersand in Santa Lucia ai Monti,

Valeggio sul Mincio, Verona, Italy.
May 26 through June 2, 2002.
Limited to six participants.
Tuition: $900, which includes all materials.
Lodging for 7 nights and transportation to and from the Locanda Belvedere:
$350.
Total: $1,250.

Participants will collectively produce a 12-page pamphlet that they will
handset and print on dampened handmade paper on an 1854 Stanhope handpress
at the Ampersand studio. Decorative elements will be printed from
photopolymer plates which will be made in the workshop. The participants
will sew the pamphlet into wrappers. One day will be devoted to a field
trip to libraries and private presses in Verona. Participants should
possess basic printing skills. For more details, see the schedule.

Faculty:

Alessandro Zanella is the proprietor of one of Italy's leading private
presses. He worked with Gabriel Rummonds at the Plain Wrapper Press between
1976 and 1982. Zanella's books were recently exhibited at the Universities
of Washington, Oregon, San Francisco, Nevada, and Utah.

Accommodations and restaurants:

During the workshop participants are encouraged to stay at the Locanda
Belvedere in Santa Lucia ai Monti, which is a short walk from the Ampersand
studio. The workshop will make the necessary arrangements for those choosing
to stay at the Locanda Belvedere. Participants will be responsible for
their own meals.

Transportation:

Santa Lucia ai Monti is a short distance from Verona, which is serviced by
the Villafranca Airport. Most direct flights from the USA land in Milan,
which is just over an hour by train from Peschiera del Garda, the stop
closest to Santa Lucia. Participants wanting to rent a personal car should
do so at the airport, in which case it would be advisable to make the
proper arrangements well before the workshop begins. However, during the
workshop a car will not be necessary since the hotel and restaurants are
just a short walk from the press. There are convenient connections to other
villages and to Verona by public bus transportation. Transportation to and
from the Villafranca Airport or the Peschiera del Garda train station will
be provided by the workshop. Transportation for the field trip will also be
provided by the workshop.

Additional information:

The confirmation deadline for the workshop is April 15, 2002. A $300
deposit, refundable before the April 15 deadline, is required to reserve a
place in the workshop and hotel. The balance is due by May 9, 2002. If
there are not a sufficient number of participants to form a class, all
deposits will be fully refunded and the workshop rescheduled for a later date.
