Like, crazy, pops!
The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection of Books as Aesthetic Objects
presents "BEATS: Artists' Books & Original Works,"
an exhibit of books and broadsides from the Beat movement of the
last century. Works on display include a four foot shaped rendering of
Gregory Corso's "Bomb," handwritten by the author in
1958, as well as Corso's European notebooks, and several letterpress
limited editions and one-of-a-kind artists' books featuring the works of
Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and William S. Burroughs.
"Propagation Hazard," in fact, features Burroughs
collaborating in the studio with David Bradshaw on original lithography
and intaglio prints, providing a glimpse past the words and into the
author's artistic vision. There are also numerous original City Lights
books from the beginnings of the movement, campy paperbacks of the time,
interesting Kerouac odds & ends, as well as an original holograph
handwritten by Allen Ginsberg: "Neal's Ashes," a
touching poem that Ginsberg wrote upon the death of Neal Cassady.
The exhibit runs through March 31, 2002, at the Jaffe Atrium Gallery,
third floor east of Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly Library. The
Atrium Gallery is accessible during regular library hours, but it's best
to schedule an appointment to view other works in the Jaffe Book Arts
Collection. Phone the collection at 561 297 0226, or email
