[BKARTS] A Fellowship of Demons

The Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection of Books as Aesthetic Objects presents
"A Fellowship of Demons: Bookworks by Leonard Baskin & the Gehenna Press,"
now through November 3, 2002, at the Jaffe Atrium Gallery at Florida
Atlantic University's Wimberly Library.

Leonard Baskin was one of America's great book artists. Demons, imps and
fiends made regular appearances in his books over the decades, and although
the subject matter is often dark and mysterious, still there is a subtle,
unmistakable humor. These demons take the stage not so much as gruesome
nightmares, but rather like old friends that come to call and keep a
watchful eye on things.

At the time of his death in 2000, Baskin was at work on "A Book of Demons."
The book was completed posthumously by the Gehenna Press, and the Jaffe
Collection has acquired one of the 26 copies made. This exhibit focuses on
Baskin's final book, while exploring other aspects of the master printer's
darker works through samples from the Jaffe Collection's extensive holdings
of Gehenna Press books, broadsides and ephemera.

The Jaffe Atrium Gallery is located in the lobby outside the Jaffe Book
Arts Collection, third floor east of Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly
Library, 777 Glades Road in Boca Raton, Florida. The Atrium Gallery is
accessible during regular library hours, but it's best to schedule an
appointment to view other works in the Jaffe Collection. Phone the
collection at (561) 297-0226, or email <jcutrone@fau.edu>.
