You're doing the right thing. A few wrapped bricks will go a long way.
Unless you are experienced and very careful, tightening a book press on
your newly made book can easily crush the spine or even the sides. Books
don't need a huge amount of pressure to dry flat. Use press boards larger
than the book, protect the book with sheets of waste paper on both sides
and load on a couple of bricks. Even an edition can be handled this way.
Save your bucks for a classy book press for later on when you get to
turning out large editions of coffee table books. ;-)
