[BKARTS] workshop and talk in New Haven

Goings on in New Haven, CT:

On Friday, October 11, 6-8 PM Carol Barton will talk about her exhibit at
the PABA (PhotArtsBookArts) Gallery. Her presentation will focus on tunnel
books and on her newest book, Luminous Towers. The event is free and open
to the public. PABA Gallery is located onthe second floor of the Foundry
Building at 33 Whitney Ave., New Haven, CT (203-773-3665). This talk is
being held in conjunction with a weekend workshop on Tunnel Books that
Carol is giving at The Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven. Unfortunately,
the workshop is full.

However, there is another workshop that is not full!

Instructors: Peter and Donna Thomas
Cost: $60. ($54. for members of CAW)

This 6 hour workshop will explore the exciting world of miniature books.
Instructors will show the group about 50 miniature books made in the last 3
centuries, and explain a bit about the history of the miniature
book.Participants will then make a miniature book with a unique and
innovative "stick structure" binding created by Peter and Donna Thomas.
This will be a doweled flap book that they have used in their editions of
Forty, Paradise, and their artist book Connoisseur. All materials will be
provided including Peter's handmade paper and various soft and hard woods.

Tools required: 1/2 inch acrylic paint brush and a bone folder. Bring
paints and pens to illustrat and add text to your books.

Peter and Donna Thomas are active in the leadership of the Miniature Book
Society and the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper
Artists. Their books can be found in many collections, including the Art of
the Book Collection at Yale University. Their research into the history of
modern and ancient papermaking is internationally recognized. Recently,
their miniature book Forty was chosen as one of three Distinguished Books
in the 1997 Miniature Book Exhibition. They have been self employed in the
book arts since 1977, making books, teaching workshops, giving lectures and
training apprentices. They currently reside in Santa Cruz, California.
