[BKARTS] bent volumes

Hello. I have a couple of Library of America volumes (www.loa.org) whose covers
and pages splay out as if the book were partially open, even when it's closed.
The bent coverboards are something in between hardback and softcover - they're
made out of what appeard to be a thin cardboard covered in cloth.

Was this caused by humidity? How can I prevent it in the future? Is there any
way to fix these books? (Will pressing them together very tighly with clamps or
just on a shelf help?

Thank you very much for your assistance.
