Re: [BKARTS] How to Repair a book but save the pastedowns?

You might want to consider lifting a flap of paste-down along the
gutter edge of the boards. You can then re-line the spine of the
text with muslin and leave flaps to eventually extend onto the
boards. You can add a new inner paper hinge (to be toned to match)
and after paring the back-side edge of the pastedown flap you can
put down these flaps. With careful pigmenting and/or in-painting
the new inner hinge should blend in to the paste-down and endpaper.
The flaps also let you reback and put the turn-ins of the spine
strip under the pastedown. It can be a virtually invisible
treatment depending on your skill.
