[BKARTS] Teaching assistant opportunity

Teaching assistant opportunity in Oakland, California

Mills College offers positions for Teaching Assistants
in its Book Arts Program. These volunteer staff
positions provide the opportunity to work in a
well-equipped book studio in exchange for assisting
with various aspects of the Book Arts Program and its

TAs work an average of three hours a week in the
studio to help beginning students with letterpress,
bookbinding, and computer skills and to teach
one or two skills workshops a semester. In addition,
TAs might organize and mount exhibitions, maintain
type and studio equipment, or otherwise assist in the
work of the studio and the program. There is one
mandatory workday per semester, as well as two or
three meetings or critiques. TA skills should include
letterpress printing, hand typesetting, basic
bookbinding, basic computer skills; other studio
skills are welcome, and TAs should expect to teach to
their strengths.

TAs have 24-hour access to the studios, including
letterpresses, type, guillotine, board shear, binding
equipment, polymer platemaker, drymount press, and
computer workstations. As volunteer staff at Mills,
TAs may check out books from the library and use the
pool, gym and other Mills facilities.

TAs make a two-year commitment, with a review after
one year; they should expect to complete at least one
major portfolio project during their tenure. (All
expenses associated with TA projects are the
responsibility of the TA, including polymer plates,
paper, binding materials, etc.) The Mills
College Book Arts Program does not discriminate on the
