[BKARTS] Workshop - The Handmade Book with Timothy Ely and Bill Fox, Anderson Ranch, Snowmass Village, CO - June 2 - 13 2003

The Handmade Book

Timothy Ely (Instructor)
Bill Fox (Instructor)

June 2 - 13 2003

Skill level: Open to all

Concept: The book is a means to transport ideas, messages and thoughts. It
can be an intriguing vehicle for reflection and communication as well as an
irresistible object to be touched and manipulated. In this workshop, you
will focus on the moving ideas of place and landscape, shaping them into
book form.

Media: Paper, bookbinding materials, decorative papers, artwork and
photographs

Techniques: Various types of books and binding methods will be discussed.
Brief, inspirational writing exercises and group readings will help form
the content. You will make two small books during the workshop, each
containing handwritten responses to the place you are exploring and what
you are learning.

Activities: Days will be occupied with technical demonstrations, hands-on
studio work, field trips and one-on-one consultations with Timothy and
Bill. Slide presentations and other show-and-tell sessions will add further
inspiration.

Prerequisites: No bookbinding experience is necessary. Poetry and prose
writers are invited to attend.

Faculty: Timothy Ely has had numerous solo and group exhibitions of his
book art including shows at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and
the Granary Books Gallery in New York. He has published several books and,
in 1996, formed Planetary Collage, a drawing studio, think tank, bakery,
teaching space, bindery and library.

Bill Fox has published six nonfiction books as well as 14 books of poetry.
In the past year, Bill has been a National Science Foundation Antarctic
visiting writer, a scholar at the Getty Research Institute, a
writer-in-residence with the Lannan Foundation and the recipient of a
Guggenheim Fellowship in photographic studies.
