Iraq Cultural Property Crisis

AIC is participating in meetings and initiatives with other cultural
organizations concerning the loss of cultural property in Iraq however
no decisions have been made on a plan of action as of April 17. AIC has
signed on to a letter to President Bush from cultural organizations
expressing concern and dismay about the damage, and requesting action. A
letter was recently sent to Col. W. Hays Parks, Special Assistant to the
Judge Advocate General of the Army, by AIC concerning Iraqi cultural
treasures. Col. Parks spoke at the AIC Annual Meeting in 1998, and can
be reached by email at <parks@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> AIC supports the statement
of the UNESCO Director-General made at an April 17 Paris meeting on the
Heritage of Iraq. He opened his statement with: "The fate of Iraqi
heritage lies in the hands of the international community as a whole."
He indicated he would ask the Secretary-General of the UN to submit
questions of illicit traffic to the Security Council regarding an
embargo on the acquisition of all Iraqi cultural objects, and to take
emergency measures such as on the ground "heritage police." For more
