[BKARTS] Peter Bishop, 1948-2003, Fine Press Printer

PETER BISHOP, proprietor of the Petrarch Press died the 21st of
March, 2003, in Oregon House, California, at the age of 54, following
a prolonged illness.

Peter founded the Petrarch Press in Oregon House in 1985, and
published "The Gospel According to Thomas" before relocating his
press to a studio in Manhattan.

From 1986 until 1996, Peter continued to pursue his aim, to publish
important world literature in fine, hand-printed editions, by issuing
a series of beautiful individually designed books, including Rilke's
Duino Elegies, Petrarch's letter on the Ascent of Mount Ventoux,
Shakespeare's Sonnets, and Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. Peter's
Petrarch Press books grace the shelves of numerous collectors and
special-collections libraries.

In his final months, Peter, together with his wife, oversaw the
re-establishment of the Petrarch Press in Oregon House as a
non-profit museum, dedicated to creating hand-printed books of
lasting value, both in content and in form.

Peter is survived by his wife, Edith Minne, his mother, and his sister.
