Re: [BKARTS] clay covers

I've made several books with clay covers - and have just finished a small edition of a book that has stoneware covers fired 2x but not glazed, then painted/metal leafed and shellaced. At the leather dry stage and before trimming to size the clay slabs were run through an etching press with a deeply bit zinc plate so an embossed image was transferred to the clay. The books are coptic bound miniatures. The trick is to let the clay dry very slowly under weights to prevent it warping as it dries. It also shrinks during
firing so the perecentage of shrinkage has to be accounted for. Next to try is paperclay and porcelain. Best, Alicia Bailey, Ravenpress
