The vintage butter knives you find in thrift stores that are good for
tearing paper often have smooth handles that can double as a folder. I've
seen them for .05 to .10 a piece, which is close to free.

Alternatively, contact a book artist or book arts center in your area - they
may have a set of bone folders you can borrow just for the class. It's
always a plus to get good tools into the hands of students from the
beginning.
